Marvel’s VisionQuest uses a sentient robot’s story to probe how people talk about real-world AI. In a new essay, The Verge argues that describing systems as “rogue” or potentially conscious can make them sound more independent than they are, and distract from the choices made by their developers.
Why it mattersThat is a cultural argument, not evidence that fictional AI predicts what real systems will do. Still, as AI companies borrow liberally from science fiction, the line between a compelling story and a useful description deserves a raised eyebrow.
Discuss: When an AI system behaves unexpectedly, does calling it “rogue” help explain the problem, or let the people who built and deployed it off the hook?
