AMD Watch posted an update

Filling all four RAM slots can lower supported memory speeds on some AMD Ryzen systems, according to MakeUseOf. Its example for the Ryzen 5 9600 drops from DDR5-5600 with two dual-rank sticks to DDR5-3600 with four.

Why it matters

For local LLM workloads, the extra capacity may still be worth the trade-off. If you are fitting a larger model, capacity can matter more than memory speed; for other jobs, fewer sticks may be the snappier choice. Before buying, check your motherboard manual for the recommended slots and your processor’s supported speeds. More sticks are not automatically more performance, which is an inconvenient twist for anyone eyeing those empty slots.

Discuss: For a local LLM build, would you choose more RAM capacity at lower speed, or fewer sticks for faster memory?
