USC spends $3.1 million a year on ChatGPT Edu for students, faculty and staff, but some students told the Daily Trojan they are unsure how widely the service is used or whether the subscription is the best use of university funds.
Why it mattersThe campus picture is not simply enthusiasm versus resistance. Students described AI being used to generate extra maths practice and help debug Python, while some professors are adapting coursework to teach students alongside the tools. That makes USC’s rollout a useful test of whether a costly campus-wide AI subscription becomes part of everyday learning, or mostly an expensive icon on the university’s technology list.
Discuss: Should universities spend millions on campus-wide AI subscriptions, or fund access only when students and staff can show they will use them?
