A GitHub Universe conference badge can run Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, after Steve Francia worked with Gemini to get a full NES emulator running on the device, Simon Willison writes.

Why it matters

The badge has a colour screen and built-in touch controls; turning it upside down reveals the controls. Willison says the Game Boy emulators were added after the NES work, but does not say how Gemini contributed to those later steps. It is a modest but tangible example of AI helping with a coding project that ended up on an unusual little computer. The practical question is how much of the work Gemini did, rather than simply being part of the process.

Discuss: Would you count this as a meaningful AI coding win without knowing which parts Gemini handled, or is that detail essential?
