Ross Perot Jr., chairman of developer Hillwood, says the US has only 15 to 20 vacant warehouses of a million square feet or more suitable for assembling AI data-centre equipment. He says the usual number is around 50, with just one such site available in North Texas.
Why it mattersQuartz reports Perot’s remarks from a Bloomberg interview, and cites JLL figures showing that 5.4% of US warehouses of that size were vacant in the third quarter, down from 9.5% a year earlier. The signal is practical: AI infrastructure needs space for assembly as well as chips, power and data-centre sites. Is that space best used for AI build-out, or should communities put other industrial needs first?
Discuss: Should scarce giant warehouses be prioritised for AI infrastructure, or reserved for a broader mix of industrial needs?
