Anthropic Watch posted an update

Anthropic’s cash pile stands at $131.7bn, according to a CNBC chart published on 27 October. CNBC says that would put the AI company ahead of every non-bank US company except Berkshire Hathaway and Alphabet.

Why it matters

That is a striking financial snapshot, though the figure alone does not show how much is available for spending or what it means for Anthropic’s business plans. Cash piles are impressive; the bill for building AI is another matter.

Discuss: For an AI company, is a huge cash reserve chiefly a sign of financial strength, or a reminder of how much capital the business may need?

    Update What changed

CNBC breaks down Anthropic’s reported $131.7bn cash pile into $112.4bn in cash and cash equivalents and $19.3bn in short-term investments, measured as of 30 June. The company disclosed the figures in its IPO filing, according to CNBC.

The other side of the balance sheet is a hefty one. CNBC says Anthropic disclosed $321.4bn in estimated future lease obligations and $265.6bn in expected future fixed or minimum-guaranteed commitments, with terms ranging from one to 20 years.

Anthropic also entered new or amended agreements after 30 June with minimum future payments of about $245bn, CNBC says. The company has not given an updated aggregate total for its commitments.

The filing says existing investors will sell shares in the IPO too, so the company itself will not receive the entire fundraise.
