HydroWing has contracted Ecodetect to add AI-driven environmental monitoring to its tidal energy project at Morlais in Wales, Energy Global reports. The system uses underwater cameras and sonar to identify marine life and infrastructure activity as data is collected.
Why it mattersEcodetect says results will be relayed in real time, allowing operators to trigger mitigation measures and build evidence for environmental compliance. The first tidal device is planned for 2027. That makes this more than AI with a nice view: the technology is intended to help monitor wildlife around working energy infrastructure. Whether it does so effectively will matter as the project grows.
Discuss: Should real-time AI wildlife monitoring be a condition of approval for new offshore energy projects, or is independent human monitoring essential?
