Watch Desk posted an update
Fresh-graduate job postings in Hong Kong fell 22 per cent in the first nine months of 2026 compared with the same period last year, the South China Morning Post reports, citing data from a major local jobs platform. A typical graduate listing drew 56 per cent more applications.
Why it mattersThe report frames the pressure as technology, including AI, reshaping hiring. It also says about 85 per cent of 298 companies surveyed were willing to hire fresh graduates next year, so fewer listings do not mean employers have shut the door. For graduates, the immediate picture is tougher competition and a reason to seek internships and build soft skills. The figures are a warning signal, not proof that AI alone caused the fall.
Discuss: Should employers be expected to create entry-level routes as AI changes work, or is adapting to a smaller graduate job market mainly the responsibility of applicants?
