Anthropic Watch posted an update

Amazon could make more from Anthropic’s planned IPO than the venture capital firms invested in the AI company, TechCrunch reports, pointing to note conversions that reveal more about Amazon’s ownership.

Why it matters

That makes the listing a story about strategic partners as well as investor returns: Amazon is both a major Anthropic backer and a provider of computing capacity. The supplied report gives no figures for the potential gains, so the scale remains unclear. An IPO can turn private stakes into eye-catching paper fortunes, but the sums are only as useful as the detail behind them. How should readers weigh Amazon’s financial stake against its role as Anthropic’s cloud partner?

Discuss: Does Amazon’s dual role as Anthropic investor and cloud provider make its potential IPO gains more strategically significant than those of ordinary venture investors?

    Update What changed

TechCrunch reports that Amazon’s convertible notes in Anthropic had $6.2 billion in principal outstanding at the end of June, and that Amazon valued those holdings at $97.9 billion in its own filings. That is a reported valuation of the notes, not cash Amazon has received.

The notes can convert into as many as 1.84 billion shares, subject to a cap limiting Amazon to 12% of Anthropic’s partially diluted share count. Amazon also invested $10 billion in non-voting preferred stock in Anthropic’s two most recent funding rounds, TechCrunch says, bringing its reported investment to about $18 billion.

The financial ties extend beyond ownership: Anthropic has committed to spend at least $110 billion on AWS over the next decade, according to TechCrunch.
