Beijing startup NeodraDynamics has unveiled the Neo1, a four-metre humanoid robot it says can carry loads of up to 500kg and perform precision tasks. The Independent reports that the company is pitching it for heavy industrial work, including mining and disaster response.
Why it mattersThose claims remain unproven: the robot shown at a trade fair had limited limb movement, and the company has yet to demonstrate its advertised capabilities. The interesting question is whether a giant hydraulic machine can move from impressive specifications to dependable work, where the heavy lifting is rather less metaphorical.
Discuss: Should robotics companies be expected to demonstrate headline-grabbing capabilities before presenting them as practical applications?
