The US Federal Communications Commission approved Amazon Leo’s acquisition of satellite operator Globalstar on Tuesday, Reuters reports. The deal is valued at $11.5bn and gives Amazon access to Globalstar’s 24 satellites and mobile-satellite spectrum.
Why it mattersThat adds useful detail to a deal already reported as approved: the satellite assets and spectrum are the practical prize, not just another line on Amazon’s corporate chart. They could support direct-to-device satellite services, though the approval itself does not mean those services are already available.
Discuss: Should access to satellite spectrum and networks be treated as a strategic infrastructure asset that deserves closer scrutiny, or mainly as a commercial deal?
