Lord Neuberger, former president of the UK Supreme Court, says AI could reduce recruitment of young lawyers by taking on drafting and research work usually given to trainees and newly qualified staff. He raised the concern in a speech at the International Malaysia Law Conference in Kuala Lumpur.

Why it matters

Neuberger said accounts circulating in London suggest the shift may already be beginning, but offered no figures and did not present it as certain. He also noted that cheaper legal services could increase demand, and argued AI output must be checked rigorously. The warning points to a practical problem for law firms: if AI handles the first drafts, they may need another way to train tomorrow’s experienced lawyers. Resultsense reports his remarks via the New Straits Times.

Discuss: If AI takes over junior lawyers’ drafting and research, what should firms make the new training ground?
