A newly public AI company may have to wait a year before it can even be considered for the S&P 500. CNBC Make It says Anthropic could face that delay if it goes public, while SpaceX would have to wait until June 2027 under the index’s usual rules.
Why it mattersThat matters to anyone holding an S&P 500 fund: a high-profile listing does not automatically become a top holding, and any eventual inclusion would depend on eligibility and the index committee. The other wrinkle is concentration. CNBC notes that nearly 40% of assets in a typical S&P 500 fund are already in its ten largest holdings. The AI boom may enter your index fund by the front door, but not necessarily in a hurry.
Discuss: Should the S&P 500’s usual waiting period protect index investors from hype, or does it unfairly keep major new companies out?
