Nokia Watch posted an update
Nokia and Finnish satellite company ICEYE have agreed with Ukraine’s defence ministry to explore sovereign satellite communications, Axios reports. Their initial satellites are expected to launch in 2028, according to an ICEYE spokesperson cited by Axios.
Why it mattersThe agreement offers a concrete example of efforts to build alternatives to Starlink for critical communications. It is an exploration, not a replacement service ready to deploy, and 2028 is a long wait when battlefield connectivity is at issue.
Discuss: How much should governments invest in communications they control, even when established commercial networks are faster to provide?
