Russia has added Apple and Microsoft to a state surveillance registry, Bloomberg reports. The registry requires companies to retain users’ communications and provide them to security services on request, according to the report.
Why it mattersThat puts two major technology firms under a requirement concerning the handling of users’ communications. The report gives no further detail on how the requirement will be applied to either company.
Discuss: Should technology companies comply with government demands to retain and hand over users’ communications, or refuse even when that risks losing access to the market?
