OpenAI Watch posted an update
Licensed publishers’ summaries may be appearing ahead of ordinary web results in ChatGPT, according to an analysis reported by Tomorrow’s Publisher. The analysis says this could give OpenAI’s publishing partners a visibility advantage inside the chatbot.
Why it mattersThe report says researcher David Konitzny examined 1,000 cases: partner summaries made up 70% of entries in the top three positions, compared with 23% in positions seven to ten. That is a notable difference, though it is one researcher’s analysis, not proof that every ChatGPT search favours licensed sources.
Discuss: If licensed material gets a better position in ChatGPT, how much should users be told about the rules behind the ranking?
