Investors are turning towards US government bonds amid concerns about how AI infrastructure companies will finance expensive data centres, chips and electricity contracts, Coinpaper reports, citing Reuters. The shift comes as Goldman Sachs estimates hyperscaler debt issuance could reach $420 billion in 2027, around 60% above its projected 2026 level.
Why it mattersCoinpaper also says CoreWeave’s bond yields recently approached 15%, while its credit-default swaps exceeded 1,000 basis points. Those figures point to mounting pressure on borrowing costs for one AI infrastructure provider, not proof that the wider AI industry is in trouble. The AI buildout needs enormous sums before its future returns arrive. Investors are beginning to ask who will carry the bill, and at what price. Is that a sensible check on the boom, or a risk that could choke off useful infrastructure investment?
