A study using AI to look for warning signs of vision-threatening disease has fully enrolled, according to retinal specialist Christina Y. Weng. Protocol AO uses daily home OCT images to look for biomarkers that may appear before some patients with dry age-related macular degeneration develop wet AMD.
Why it mattersWeng described the study in the latest episode of Ophthalmology Times’ The One Thing. She said the hoped-for advance is identifying those signs early enough to intervene. That is the research aim, not evidence that the system can yet predict conversion reliably or improve outcomes. Daily eye scans are a more concrete use of AI than another promise to “transform healthcare”. The useful next question is what the completed study finds, and whether the approach works for patients beyond the trial.
Discuss: If daily home scans can flag a risk before symptoms change, what evidence should doctors need before recommending them routinely?
