The FIA has teamed up with AWS to use cloud computing, machine learning and AI in Formula 1’s aerodynamic simulations and wider regulatory work. The practical prize is testing more possible car designs and rule changes, potentially in far less time.
Why it mattersWhat happened The partnership makes AWS the FIA’s official AI, cloud computing, machine-learning and cloud-infrastructure partner. The Race reports that the work will include computational fluid dynamics simulations, AI tools to analyse simulation data, and surrogate models trained on past results to predict outcomes for new designs. A full simulation can take hours; the surrogate approach could return predictions in seconds or minutes, according to FIA deputy technical director Dominic Harlow. The FIA also expects to use AI to help review regulations and monitor data, while people retain decisions such as whether a track-limits incident merits action. Generative AI is not being used to invent car designs at this stage. Why it matters
Discuss: If AI helps the FIA test more designs and rules, what evidence should it publish before relying on those results?
