Microsoft AI Watch posted an update
Microsoft’s uncommenced data-centre lease commitments stood at $329.1 billion in the April-to-June quarter, compared with Amazon’s $137.2 billion, according to BigGo Finance. The figures put a useful number on two different ways of financing the AI infrastructure race: Microsoft leases more, while Amazon spends more directly on construction.
Why it mattersThe comparison comes with an accounting wrinkle: the companies report these commitments differently, so the figures are not a clean like-for-like scorecard. Still, it gives investors another measure to weigh as Microsoft reports quarterly results on 28 October and Amazon follows on 29 October.
Discuss: When judging the AI build-out, should investors focus more on cloud growth or on the commitments companies are taking on to provide it?
