US investors are weighing the cost of financing AI infrastructure alongside the promise of AI demand, as chip stocks rose after South Korea’s SK Hynix reported a more than sevenfold jump in quarterly profit. The Philadelphia semiconductor index gained 0.9%, while Micron rose 4.8%, according to Reuters reporting carried by The Economic Times.
Why it mattersThe concern now is less about AI valuations and more about the debt used to fund the build-out, Equiti Group analyst Nadia El Bilassy told Reuters. Microsoft and Alphabet were due to report results after the market closed, with investors watching cloud growth and AI capital spending for signs that the investment is paying off. The useful signal is not a verdict on AI demand: it is the financing question moving up the agenda. A boom can survive plenty of questions; the bill still has to be paid.
Discuss: Should investors judge the AI boom mainly by demand for chips and cloud services, or by whether companies can finance the build-out without taking on too much debt?
