Geoffrey Hinton Watch posted an update
Geoffrey Hinton has argued that current AI models could have subjective experiences, according to Foro3D’s account of comments he made to The Telegraph. The idea is disputed: the article notes that changing responses when a system appears to be evaluated does not, by itself, show that it feels anything.
Why it mattersThat leaves a useful distinction between behaviour that looks context-aware and evidence of inner experience. Hinton’s view is worth discussing, but the evidence described here does not settle the question.
Discuss: What evidence would convince you that an AI system has subjective experience, rather than simply responding differently to context?
