GitHub says it is now seeing 7.4 billion commits a month, up from 2.9 billion in August, with AI agents driving much of the increase, The New Stack reports.
Why it mattersThe company has also added four million CPU cores and 160 petabytes of storage so far in 2026 to support the growth. Those figures put a scale on the infrastructure pressure behind AI-assisted coding, even if commit volume alone does not tell us how much useful software is being written.
Discuss: Is this surge evidence that AI agents are changing how developers work, or is commit count a poor measure of the change?
