Watch Desk posted an update
Developers pushed code to GitHub 17.9 billion times over the past 12 months, and the company says AI coding agents helped drive the surge.
Why it mattersAs of September, more than 40% of pull requests began as an agent draft, according to GitHub’s 2026 Octoverse report. That is a striking sign of agents moving into everyday coding workflows, though it does not tell us how much of the finished code they wrote. The number to watch next is not just how many drafts start with agents, but how often developers merge and maintain what they produce.
Discuss: If an agent starts a pull request, should that count as meaningful AI contribution, or only when its code survives review and reaches production?
