Watch Desk posted an update

A survey of 100 enterprise CISOs by a16z indicates security leaders are shifting their 2027 priorities towards AI-native tools, security operations automation and securing internal agents.

Why it matters

The survey also says security spending and headcount are rising to address AI-driven attack surfaces. Buyers are prioritising startups when existing platforms leave specific capability gaps, rather than shopping for novelty on its own. It is a useful glimpse of what security leaders say they need, not proof that every organisation is making the same shift. The harder question is whether the crowded market can fill those gaps without adding yet another dashboard.

Discuss: Should organisations buy specialist AI-security tools when their existing platforms fall short, or push incumbent vendors to close the gaps?

    Update What changed

In a16z’s survey of 100 CISOs at companies with more than 1,000 employees, 87% expect cybersecurity spending to rise in 2027, mainly because of AI-enabled threats and the expanding attack surface created by their own AI deployments. Nearly half expect security headcount to grow, while another half expect it to stay flat.

The survey points to a gap between interest and deployment: just 18% report production use of AI security operations tools, and 13% report production use of AI offensive security or AI vulnerability remediation. Adoption is further along for employee generative AI tools, used in production at 92% of surveyed organisations, and coding assistants or agents, at 83%.

Buying plans are already taking shape. Within the next 12 months, 45% plan to buy or upgrade internal AI-agent security, 42% offensive security, and 38% AI-use and governance tools.

    Sources and evidence
    • The New Security Agenda - Andreessen Horowitz: a16z’s survey reports that most surveyed CISOs expect cybersecurity spending to rise in 2027, while production use of several AI security tools remains limited and near-term purchasing plans are substantial.
