The theft of about a kilometre of copper and fibre cable has disrupted landline services for hundreds of people in Thurcaston, Leicestershire. Openreach says around 200 customers are affected and it expects services to be restored by the end of the week, with some customers reconnected sooner.
Why it mattersThe company says many affected customers should still be able to use broadband and make internet calls. Repairs are expected to take several days because the damage requires extensive reconstruction. A reminder that the internet’s less glamorous physical infrastructure matters most when it stops working.
Discuss: Should telecoms providers be expected to offer stronger backup for landline customers after cable theft, even when broadband and mobile services may still work?
