PC shipments fell sharply in the third quarter, even as demand for servers and AI computing remained comparatively strong, according to a BigGo Finance report published on 28 October. The contrast matters for Intel and AMD: a weak PC market need not mean every part of their business is heading the same way.
Why it mattersThe report cites estimates from Gartner and Omdia putting the year-on-year fall in global PC shipments at roughly 21 to 22 per cent. It says server demand is helping offset pressure on the companies’ consumer-computing businesses, while stressing that upcoming results will test the picture. Intel reports on 29 October and AMD on 3 November. Analyst forecasts are not company results, but these calls should help show whether strong servers can keep carrying the load.
Discuss: Is this a temporary split between AI infrastructure and consumer PCs, or a more lasting change in what chipmakers depend on?
