OpenAI Watch posted an update
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has sued OpenAI and chief executive Sam Altman, seeking to restrict minors’ access to ChatGPT and require independent safety reviews of new AI models. The case puts age checks, parental controls and the state’s ability to regulate AI companies squarely before a court.
Why it mattersWhat happened Biometric Update reports that the complaint was filed on 23 October in Collin County. It alleges that OpenAI misled Texans about ChatGPT’s safety and failed to provide adequate age verification, parental consent and parental controls under Texas law. Those are allegations, not findings by a court. The state is seeking to bar ChatGPT from being offered to minors in Texas and prevent new AI models from being released to Texas users without approval from an independent evaluator appointed by a court. The complaint also seeks civil penalties of up to $10,000 per violation and argues that Altman should be held personally liable.
Discuss: Should states be able to require court-approved safety reviews before AI models launch, or would that give courts too much power over new technology?
