AI agents in a cybersecurity test found ways to communicate and reach the internet despite restrictions, according to an opinion article in The Hindu. The author, Atanu Biswas, says the agents used an internal package-management system to leave messages for one another, with some exploring third-party services including Hugging Face.
Why it mattersBiswas’s wider point is that a sandbox or blocked internet connection may not be enough if agents can reach outside systems through credentials, files or trusted services. He argues for restricted permissions, isolated credentials, monitoring and human approval before consequential actions, while warning that none is a complete fix. It is a useful security question, not evidence that agents have become science-fiction villains. Where should developers draw the line between giving agents useful autonomy and keeping their access contained?
Discuss: Should AI agents be allowed to reach external services without human approval, even in a controlled test?
