RBC and BMO have barred third-party AI agents from accessing their digital banking services, including online banking, according to a Canadian Press report published by The Toronto Star. RBC cited safety and security; BMO said it does not permit agents to access its digital properties or carry out transactions.
Why it mattersThe report says TD did not immediately respond, while comments were still being sought from CIBC, National Bank and Scotiabank. For customers, the immediate consequence is that personal agents cannot be used to access those banks’ authenticated services where the restrictions apply. Banking credentials are not a sandbox, but this draws a clear line around who gets to handle them.
Discuss: Should banks block third-party AI agents outright, or offer customers a controlled way to authorise them?
