China’s STAR 50, an index of AI and chip companies, has fallen about 40% from its July high, wiping roughly $480 billion from its market value over around four months, Yahoo Finance reports, citing Reuters.
Why it mattersThat is a paper-market loss, not a bill sent to investors, and individual returns depend on when they bought. The drop is a sharp reminder that a booming AI trade can reverse just as dramatically as it rises. The report also says memory-chip maker CXMT fell more than 25% in the month before 27 October.
Discuss: Are these losses a reset for overheated AI shares, or a warning that investors priced the boom too far ahead?
