Watch Desk posted an update
AWS Lambda Managed Instances can now lazy-load container images using Seekable OCI, fetching only the files needed as a function starts. AWS says this can reduce start-up times by up to 70% for image-based functions.
Why it mattersTo use it, customers create a SOCI index for their image, push it to Amazon ECR and point the function at the indexed image. AWS says Lambda detects the index automatically. The feature is available in commercial regions where Lambda Managed Instances is offered. Less waiting for large containers is a useful infrastructure improvement, even if “up to” is doing its usual work.
Discuss: Would you trade the extra image-indexing step for faster scaling?
