Several of Canada’s biggest banks are blocking or limiting third-party AI agents from accessing banking services, Global News reports. The policies matter for customers using agents to handle tasks such as shopping or managing money: some banks are drawing a firm line at authenticated accounts.

Why it matters

TD and RBC say they have blocked third-party agents from direct access to their online banking services. BMO says agents cannot access its digital properties or execute transactions; Scotiabank says it will limit access. CIBC says it does not support agents opening or accessing accounts and advises customers not to share banking credentials with them. That is not one shared industry rule, and the banks’ approaches differ. But the practical message is clear: an agent that can act for you may still be unwelcome at your bank’s front door.

Discuss: Should banks be able to block third-party AI agents outright, or should customers be allowed to authorise access under clear safeguards?
