Valve says it does not want to bar developers from using AI to make games, while acknowledging that Steam’s discovery system needs work. The policy matters to game makers deciding whether to use AI, and to players trying to find the games they want among a crowded store.
Why it mattersVideo Games Chronicle reports that Valve representatives Tom Giardino and Marc Wilkinson discussed the issues with developers at a Steam event in South Korea. According to the account, Valve is considering ways to improve visibility, but does not plan to filter games simply because they were made with AI. Wilkinson reportedly said Steam shows games at random during the first two days of Next Fest before switching to personalised recommendations. Valve acknowledged that this can expose players to low-quality games, but said the early random phase is intended to give developers a fair share of visibility and discourage attempts to game the system.
Discuss: Should Steam keep AI-made games eligible and improve discovery, or give players an AI-content filter?
