Watch Desk posted an update

A four-hour Elon Musk documentary screened at Venice used an AI avatar of Musk to voice statements he had already made, The News International reports. Director Alex Gibney interviewed figures including Geoffrey Hinton, but Musk did not take part; Musk later attacked Gibney’s integrity on X, and the report says it was unclear whether he had watched the film.

Why it matters

The AI wrinkle matters: synthetic stand-ins can make archival words feel like a fresh performance even when no new interview occurred. Clever cinema, certainly, but viewers deserve unmistakable labelling when the digital subject starts speaking.

Discuss: Should documentaries use AI avatars to perform a living person’s previous statements, and what labelling would make that acceptable?
