Samsung Electronics reported third-quarter operating profit of 107.4 trillion won, about $80.4bn, as demand for AI-related memory grew. Korea JoongAng Daily says the figure topped the profits of Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta, whose spending on AI data centres is helping drive demand for Samsung’s chips.
Why it mattersThe result gives the AI infrastructure boom a striking measure: a supplier’s quarterly operating profit outpaced those of three of its biggest customers. CNBC also reports the 107.44 trillion won result, describing it as broadly in line with analysts’ expectations. The forecasts differ by tracker, so the comparison is the clearer headline than a victory lap over estimates.
Discuss: For the AI industry, which matters more: the companies building the models, or the suppliers cashing in on the hardware rush?
