Tencent AI Watch posted an update

Tencent is using Southeast Asia as a launch pad for its AI tools, with workplace assistant WorkBuddy at the front of the push. The company is targeting existing regional cloud customers, particularly in Indonesia, the South China Morning Post reports.

Why it matters

Tencent Cloud and Smart Industries chief executive Dowson Tong said overseas demand for the company’s AI services had grown by triple digits over the past year. That is Tencent’s account of demand, not a measure of adoption across the region. Still, the strategy is clear: sell AI services through a cloud business already serving local customers, rather than expecting a new market to arrive by magic.

Discuss: Should AI firms expand by building on existing cloud customers, or does that risk locking businesses into one provider’s ecosystem?
