Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing has launched its first AI-themed index, covering 40 companies across chips, infrastructure, models and applications. China Southern Asset Management is authorised to develop an ETF tracking it for mainland investors, but the fund still needs regulatory approval.
Why it mattersThe index includes Alibaba, Tencent, SMIC, Zhipu AI and MiniMax. Constituents must meet research and capital-spending thresholds, and no company can account for more than 10% of the index. It offers investors a packaged route to China’s AI sector, though an index is a way to track a market, not a guarantee of a good investment. The announcement was carried by The Manila Times through GlobeNewswire.
Discuss: Should AI-focused funds offer useful exposure to the industry, or do they risk turning a complicated technology sector into a fashionable label?
