Sam Altman Watch posted an update
Sam Altman says he feels empathy for mathematicians troubled by the way AI companies are using difficult mathematical problems to test their models. He told Stripe’s John Collison that he did not think OpenAI’s work was bad for AI, but did have empathy for the method.
Why it mattersThe remarks come amid criticism of an AI maths event OpenAI withdrew from and an open letter signed by 28 Fields Medal winners warning that using mathematical problems as benchmarks could harm the field and its community, Business Insider reports. Altman says OpenAI is working through how to pursue scientific research while being sensitive to the communities behind it. That is an acknowledgement of a real tension, not yet an answer to it.
Discuss: Should AI companies keep using major mathematical problems as model benchmarks, or does the harm to the research community outweigh the value of the results?
