Electronic duo Zeds Dead say generative AI can feel like “hyper-sampling”, but the artists are wary of music made at the click of a button. In a MusicTech interview, Zachary Rapp-Rovan said he sees AI as a possible threat to the human connection that draws him to music.

Why it matters

The pair’s view is not a blanket rejection: Rapp-Rovan said he is open to tools such as stem separation and voice changing. Their distinction is between tools that help reshape music and systems that produce finished work with little effort from the person using them. That is a working musicians’ perspective, not a verdict on what AI can or cannot create. But for a duo whose music and live shows celebrate the history behind samples, the question is pointed: should AI-made music count as creative dialogue with the past, or does that depend on the human choices behind it?
