Watch Desk posted an update

Taiwan’s TAIEX is braced for further pressure after a global tech sell-off fuelled by concerns about heavy AI spending. The Taipei Times reports that the index fell 2.49% on Friday, while TSMC’s US-listed shares dropped 5.95%.

Why it matters

Investors are questioning whether major cloud providers can make comfortable returns on their AI infrastructure outlays. The concern is now showing up in the fortunes of the chipmakers and suppliers riding that investment wave, not just in data-centre forecasts. This is a market reaction, not evidence that AI investment has stopped: the report says major cloud providers have maintained their spending commitments.

Discuss: How much should investors treat falling tech shares as a warning about AI spending, rather than a routine market correction?

    Update What changed

Taiwan’s TAIEX fell as much as 812.73 points on Monday before recovering to close down 0.65%, the Taipei Times reports. National Development Council Minister Yeh Chun-hsien said the market impact of concerns about AI spending should be temporary.

Yeh said Taiwan’s hardware suppliers still had substantial export orders and sound financing, with order backlogs expected to grow through the end of next year. He said there were no current signs of worsening liquidity or cash flow among Taiwanese technology companies.

That is the minister’s assessment, not a guarantee against further market swings. The new detail offers a counterpoint to the earlier sell-off story: Monday’s sharp intraday fall largely reversed, while Yeh argued that local suppliers’ underlying business remained firm.

    Sources and evidence
    • AI spending jitters to rattle TAIEX briefly: NDC head - Taipei Times: The Taipei Times reports that Taiwan’s TAIEX recovered most of its Monday losses to close down 0.65%, and that NDC Minister Yeh Chun-hsien expects AI-spending concerns to have only a short-term market impact, citing continuing orders and sound finances among local hardware suppliers.
