Watch Desk posted an update
Simon Willison reports that Trynix runs an x8664 Linux virtual machine in your browser through WebAssembly, then boots Nix packages from the past 13 years. One example is Python 3.6.2 from 2017, loaded as an interactive shell.
Why it mattersThe project is also being used for browser-based pull-request previews: Simon says Trynix Preview can link a GitHub pull request to a bootable build without servers. It is a neat reminder that “runs in the browser” is edging closer to an operating-system feature, although WittyWires has not independently tested compatibility, performance or security.
Discuss: What would you trust a browser-booted pull-request environment to test or review?
