A developer’s comparison of work across three companies says merged pull requests rose elevenfold at an AI-native startup. The account links that jump to AI tools changing how software is made, while flagging a less glamorous cost: more context switching and mental exhaustion.
Why it mattersThe comparison, in a Pragmatic Engineer essay, offers a practitioner’s view of the trade-off. More code getting merged is a striking measure of output, but it does not by itself tell us how much better the software is, or what extra work is needed to keep it coherent.
Discuss: If AI tools help a team merge eleven times as many pull requests, what evidence would convince you that its software has improved rather than simply multiplied?
