Azerbaijan’s State Tax Service lists Anthropic and OpenAI among 24 non-resident digital service providers registered for VAT. Both companies’ registrations are dated 1 September 2026, according to Trend.Az’s report of the agency’s response.
Why it mattersThe service says seven non-resident providers registered during 2025, when 15.5 million manat in VAT was assessed on non-residents. Those figures cover the wider group, not the two AI companies individually. One useful distinction: the article’s headline says the firms pay VAT, but its company list establishes registration, not how much either paid. For global AI businesses, tax compliance is becoming part of the international rollout.
Discuss: Should countries publish what each major digital provider actually pays, or is registration and overall tax data enough?
