Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi says the company’s platform can help robotaxis earn more through higher use of each vehicle and shared charging and maintenance. In remarks published alongside its quarterly results, he said Uber plans to put around 2,000 robotaxis on the road in 2027, ahead of a much larger commercial expansion from 2028.
Why it mattersThat is Uber’s pitch, not proof the economics will work. But it makes the contest about more than who builds the self-driving system: Uber wants to be the booking and operations layer, while also running some vehicles itself. How much of the robotaxi business should belong to the platform that finds the passengers?
Discuss: Should robotaxi operators rely on platforms such as Uber to find riders and manage fleets, or build those relationships themselves?
