A global gas crunch could last into 2027, with growing AI data-centre demand adding pressure to supplies already disrupted by the Iran war, OilPrice reports. The article says Asian LNG prices have more than tripled since January and cites the International Energy Agency’s forecast of a 3% fall in global LNG production this year.
Why it mattersThe AI connection is a growing call on power, not the sole cause of the shortage: the report also points to lost Qatari exports and competition between Europe and Asia for LNG. Data centres have joined the energy-demand debate, where the bill is rather less theoretical.
Discuss: If AI data centres are adding to gas demand during a supply crunch, should their operators have to show how much energy they use and where it comes from?
