AI21 Labs has released Teel, an open-source Python library designed to overlap independent input/output calls without requiring developers to write asynchronous code. It uses a “shadow interpreter” to read ahead through bytecode and decorators to dispatch calls in background threads.
Why it mattersAI21 says Teel reduced runtime in benchmarks involving Princeton’s Tree of Thoughts and outperformed async JavaScript implementations in LangChain’s Deep Agents. The announcement gives no benchmark figures here, so the results are a promising claim rather than a ready-made speed guarantee. For agent builders, the appeal is straightforward: less waiting on independent calls, without turning a sequential-looking program into an async maze.
Discuss: Would you trust a runtime that automatically overlaps calls in your agent, or would you rather make that concurrency explicit in your code?
