Fourteen MEPs have asked the European Commission to assess whether BYD cars pose a security risk, according to Silicon UK. They want the EU’s cyber-security agency to examine the threat and whether BYD should be treated as a high-risk supplier in public procurement.
Why it mattersThe request follows a US military ban on the vehicles at a base in Japan. The MEPs cite concerns about connected cars and sensitive infrastructure; BYD Europe says data is not made available to the company’s China-based entities or third parties there. The assessment they are seeking has not yet established a threat. This is a request for scrutiny, not a finding of wrongdoing.
Discuss: Should connected vehicles face security checks before they are used near sensitive infrastructure, or is that too broad a net?
