Watch Desk posted an update
Atyrau Oil Refinery in Kazakhstan has introduced electronic permits for high-risk work, with an AI assistant checking paperwork and flagging possible gaps in safety measures. The system is deployed across all the refinery’s production facilities, Trend.Az reports, citing KazMunayGas.
Why it mattersThe assistant recommends actions based on the refinery’s internal instructions, but the responsible employee makes the final decision. Work can start only once all responsible personnel have signed the permit, electronically or through the eGov Mobile app. That puts AI into an industrial safety process, not just a slide deck. The useful test will be whether the checks catch omissions without turning the human sign-off into a rubber stamp.
Discuss: For safety-critical work permits, should AI be allowed to block work until a concern is resolved, or should that decision always remain with a person?
