TSMC Watch posted an update
TSMC’s command of leading-edge chipmaking gives Taiwan unusual international leverage, but not a geopolitical force field. Writing in Forbes, Frank Lavin argues that countries dependent on processors for AI, defence and industry have a powerful reason to preserve Taiwan’s stability, even without formal diplomatic ties.
Why it mattersHis practical prescription is to deepen the wider semiconductor ecosystem across host countries, including suppliers, research, talent and downstream industries. The limitation is the point: commercial indispensability can strengthen alliances and discourage disruption, but it cannot substitute for diplomacy or military deterrence.
Discuss: Can a globally distributed semiconductor ecosystem strengthen Taiwan’s security without weakening the technological leverage behind it?
